Less is More
One way to furnish a small space is to choose items that don’t block your view. You can go for glass or acrylic tables and open-sided bookcases that serve their function while making your room feel bigger.
Slim Tables
Side and kitchen tables usually occupy a lot of space and can easily crowd a small kitchen, dining room, or seating area. Opt for small or narrow tables instead that you can set up where you want when the need arises. You can also set a narrow pub table against the back of a sofa and it can do double duty as a kitchen seating area without taking additional floor space. A slim side table can also hold remotes and lamps while making the most of the open space in the room.
Corner Desk
Corners are often underutilized areas in a home. That unused corner can be transformed into a little office or workspace just by adding a corner desk. You can choose from many styles of corner desks to fit your decor and purpose. For maximum use of the space, pair the desk with a slim chair.
Mirror, Mirror
Mirrors make any small room feel bigger. Create a sense of more space with a decorative mirror. Install a long, narrow mirror on an empty wall to add depth and light to any room. Or, you can use mirrors to brighten a cramped entryway, hallway, or bathroom.
Go Natural
Natural lighting also makes a room feel bigger. Using white or light-colored window treatments and sheer curtains will let more light come through even without big windows.
Keep Accents Small
Consider the size of every decor item–not just the furniture–when decorating a small room. A small space will feel even smaller if you add large framed art, oversized pillows, or overstuffed armchairs. On the other hand, accent pieces with slender profiles and smaller sizes will balance the feel of the room.
Double Duty
Small rooms usually don’t have enough space for multiple furniture with individual uses. To maximize function and space, look for furniture that can be used for different purposes. A storage ottoman serves a double purpose as a stylish seating place as well as a receptacle for blankets or other items.
It is also good to think out of the box when choosing furniture for your rooms. For instance, a buffet or sideboard can be used as a TV stand, and a dresser as instant storage! Don’t be hung up on the intended purpose of a piece of furniture; instead, look for other creative ways it can be of use around your home.
